GREY NAG, TOM SMITH'S STONE, BLACK FELL

Map 11

Onwards! A sheepdog across the river, so the farmer's about somewhere.
Onwards! Sometimes we can't walk next to the river and have to go higher up.
Footbridge, though we don't go over it.
The Pennine Way crosses this footbridge.
View toward Gilderdale Bridge. Our intention was to follow the river to the bridge where we'd parked. We got as far as the edge of the wood but could go no further due to an electric fence we could not cross, plus there were lots of young bullocks in the field, so we returned to the footbridge.
View back up the river. Although a lovely beck to follow, it was hard going and if I had to do the walk again, I would take the track I saw higher up the fell at Woldgill Scar which seemed to head toward Black Hill and the disused mine workings we came across near the beginning of the walk.
